Sculptures

Artists frequently gravitate to a medium for which they have a characterlogical affinity. Those with strong kinesthetic and spacial attributes lean more to the action oriented, dynamic, and performance aspects of their craft. It is no accident that some choose three dimensions over two, or manipulating plastic materials such as clay over chipping away stone or welding metal. Working in clay and specifically on the potters wheel puts constraints upon what may be expressed. By its very nature, clay lacks the tensile strength to project far into space. Most wheel thrown forms are symmetrical, usually functional vessels, and at best interpretive in their aesthetic potential. It is only after the wheel stops and the clay is altered that innovative forms may be generated.

The artist’s challenge, as always, is to explore the mediums possibilities and when appropriate, to push the materials limit, finding new forms, surfaces and scale. My recent sculptures are the endeavors of a former professional potter to find new avenues of expression. All forms and much of the surface treatment are generated on the potters wheel.

Teapots
Sandy Kinzie

Over a decade ago I discovered this addictive material - clay. In this shorttime, I've taken many classes and countless wonderful workshops, learning something helpful from every potter/teacher. Through the exploration of many processes, I find myself drawn to both the wheel and hand building. I'm most fascinated by functional pots.

Throwing bowls and hand building teapots from textured thrown slabs is a constant challenge. My husband, Bob, a long time professional potter, is my textured slab maker. I like to create pieces that others are drawn to while I'm constantly trying to improve the design and functionality of my work. Creating new teapot shapes, while learning new ways to use the ever evolving textures that Bob makes on the thrown slabs we both work with keeps us coming back to the studio. I'm intrigued by the infinite possibilities of varied designs and sizes, always striving to make them more enjoyable for both me, the maker, and the recipient, the user.
